Chanukah Medley

Currently, I have all of my students working on music for sharing. The students become better musicians when they play together.  Additionally, cooperative music making builds friendships.  I make an effort to have siblings play together. It creates family memories that last a lifetime.

I teach a pair of brothers for whom it has become more and more of a challenge to select holiday music.  Christmas piano duets are easy to find. Chanukah duets are more difficult. So in defense, this year I composed a Chanukah duet for them.

Wouldn’t you know it!  The older brother ended up with a football injury and one arm in a cast for weeks. So now we are working on a piece written for four hands at one piano, with three hands.  The cast came off last week.  As a tribute to their dedication, the piece is going to shine at the recital on Friday.  Enjoy listening to their second to last lesson before the recital, and the first lesson with all four hands!

Garden Nutcracker

Where does inspiration begin?

At the Phipps Winter Flower show, it began with the Nutcracker.  Just like Mary, visitors could look through the keyhole into the delights beyond.

Fancifully decorated trees and a variety of other vignettes abounded.

Some of the rooms were formal.

Others a peak into the kingdom of sweets.

The flowers danced through the greenery.

Enjoy the garden railroad.

Take a trip past Santa’s sleigh.

Let the music pull you into a magical world.

CelloBrationS at Anna and Brandon’s Wedding

Anna and BrandonNovember 11, 2011 CelloBrationS shared the musical responsibilities with the pianist Elana.  Many people commented about how beautiful the music was and how much they enjoyed the contrast between the cellos and the piano. CelloBrationS debuted a new Goltremann arrangement and also performed the Faure Pavane. The bride processed to Goltermann’s Romance and the recessional was Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.

As the wedding began, the flower girl placed the rose pedals in a beautiful path.

“May your home be filled with laughter and the warm embrace of a
summer day.
May you find peacefulness and beauty, challenge, and
satisfaction, humor and insight, healing and renewal, love and wisdom, as in a
quiet heart.
May you always feel that what you have is enough.”

CelloBrationS Surfin’

CelloBrationS participated in a nautical concert on November 4th. The cellists were featured in “From the Sea” and a premier of “Cellos Gone Surfin’.”  All the musicians, including a fine bass player, brought to life the “Jolly Sailor.”  “Pirates of the Caribbean” made an appearance.  The evening wasn’t complete  until “Pirate John Walks the Plank.”  If you missed the boat, an excerpt of “Cellos Gone Surfin'” can be viewed here.

The Composer is Dead

Greenville Symphony performed the “Composer is Dead” composed by Nathaniel Stookey with narration by Lemony Snicket last night.  The piece was well received by the audience with some tittering and guffaws at just the right places.  It was interesting to watch the layers of sound being constructed through the interviews.  I am looking forward to the second performance for the school age audience on Tuesday.

Not the scariest part of the program though!  I’ve never played a concert before where the conductor arrived and departed by casket.  Totally up there with Darth Vader in the drive-through window at Wendy’s.  Altogether a spooky day.
