Practice creates myelin

I read a terrific book about learning, practice, and how it affects the brain over time. Look for The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle.  It makes me happy to see there is research to support that learning is a series of attempts, failures, trials and discovery.

Learn Like Yo-Yo Ma, Day 3

Violin Partita No 2 in D Minor, Gigue. Day 3

Cello Suite No 1 in G Major, Prelude. Day 3

I think the purpose of a piece of music is significant when it actually lives in somebody else. A composer puts down a code, and a performer can activate the code in somebody else. Once it lives in somebody else, it can live in others as well.       Yo-Yo Ma

Learn Like Yo-Yo Ma

At the Proms, Yo-Yo Ma presented all six of the Bach Cello Suites in the same performance, from memory, with no intermission.  During one of the interviews, he talked about learning and memorizing the suites. He began when he was 4 by learning one measure. The next day he learned the next measure. Then in about a month he had learned the first movement.

Your point contest challenge is to learn a movement of Bach like Yo-Yo Ma, one measure at a time, one day at a time.

Violinists will be working on the Violin Partita No 2 in D Minor, Gigue. Day 1

Violists and cellists will be working on the Cello Suite No 1 in G Major, Prelude. Day 1
