A Day in Pittsburgh – Heinz Hall

Leaving PPG Wintergarden, I made my way over to Heinz Hall. The garden adjacent to the building still had roses blooming.

120912 252

In December, it is very unusual to see such a flash of color.

120912 254

This is the sixth street entrance to Heinz Hall. All of the doors have green canopies above them.

120912 259 The canopies are painted inside and surrounded by light bulbs.

120912 257

Above the doors inside the canopies there are relief carvings.

120912 258The doors also follow the arched motif.

120912 255

I took several pictures of the stonework near the top of the building.

120912 264 120912 265Once inside, I took a picture of the Christmas tree from the lobby.

120912 272

Another picture near the tree from the second floor balcony. 120912 275

Then looking down from the balcony.

120912 273

This is what the canopies look like from inside the building. The windows let in some natural light and you can  see the designs.

120912 276 The hall is very ornate with lots of gold leaf.120912 278The drinking fountains echo the themes of ancient sculptures.

120912 280

Turn a corner and there is a marble table and mirror.120912 281

Also from the second level, a picture of  one of the two main foyers.

120912 282

I arrived in the hall in time to listen to the preconcert lecture. I had an enjoyable time listening to the program. If you are curious, I heard Haydn’s Symphony No. 68, Mason Bates’ Violin Concerto with Anne Akiko Meyers as the soloist, and Saint-Saens’s Symphony No. 3. Leonard Slatkin was conducting.

After the concert, I retraced my steps back across the river.

120912 293

I was once again swimming against a sea of Steelers’ fans

120912 298

to meet everyone and head for home.

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star!

There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

Which means that you can check out your favourite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

PPG Wintergarden

PPG Wintergarden was all decked out for the holidays. A giant Christmas tree dominates the middle of the space.

120912 145

The tree is surrounded by trains and a gingerbread village.

120912 211

The perimeter of the room had life-sized Santas and more gingerbread villages on display.

120912 131

Although it was quiet during my visit, the stage was ready for musical performers.

120912 160

Look for the PPG Santas and PPG Gingerbread next.

A Day in Pittsburgh – Part 2

Leaving Point State Park, I saw the Post-Gazette building and

120912 050

the United Steelworkers building.

120912 051

I passed the Highmark building.

120912 052

And I saw the giant Christmas tree on the Hornes Building.

120912 057

I remember seeing it as a young child and wondering how it is attached to the building.

120912 060

It is still a mystery!

I passed the Christmas Market in Market Square.

Market Square

Then turned the corner, and saw the ice skaters at PPG plaza.

120912 220

I wanted to see the display at the Wintergarden.

A Day in Pittsburgh – Part 1

Sunday, December 9th, I spent the day in Pittsburgh. I hitched a ride with my brother-in-law and family who were going to the Steelers’ Game. We got up very early and parked at Rivers Casino. After a very filling brunch we split up and I began walking. I started down the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. I passed the USS Requin docked at the Carnegie Science Center.

Requin

I continued down the trail. The Carnegie Science Center was behind me.

Carnegie Science Center

I could see fans taking advantage of the Gateway Clipper Fleet to cross the river to the game.

Steeler Fans on the River

WDVE was in action near the stadium.

WDVE Steelers Truck

Across the river I could see the Duquesne Incline.

Incline

I continued down the trail along the stadium.

December at Heinz Field

I passed the “A Gate” of Heinz Field.

Heinz Field

Some fans were enjoying the outdoor cafe’s and entertainment.

Entertainment before Steelers Game

I used the sidewalk along the bridge to get to Point State Park.

Double decker bridge

I didn’t take any pictures from the bridge because I felt like  a turtle going the wrong way during a salmon run.

Fans on the bridge

This gives you some idea of how many people were going toward the game while I was going the opposite direction.

In Point State Park I passed the Christmas tree at the point and

the Fort Pitt Museum.

The narrative continues in A Day in Pittsburgh – Part 2.
